Determination of primary aromatic amines in food simulant B
Proficiency Test Report

The European Union Reference Laboratory for Food Contact Materials (EURL-FCM) organised a proficiency testing round (FCM-22/02) for the determination of primary aromatic amines (PAA) in food simulant B. This proficiency testing (PT) round was open to all EU National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) and interested Official Control Laboratories (OCLs). Test item 1 and test item 2 consisted of one solution in clean food simulant B (acetic acid 3 % w/v in Milli-Q water) spiked with 7 PAA and one solution in food simulant B obtained from a migration test on nylon kitchenware spiked with 7 PAA, respectively. The assigned values, homogeneity and stability of the two test items were evaluated by the EURL. The assigned values were determined from the formulation. Sixteen NRLs and 21 OCLs registered to the exercise. Three OCLs did not report results. The results were rated using z, and zeta (ζ) scores in accordance with ISO 13528:2022. Relative standard deviations for proficiency assessment (σpt,rel) were 15 % for test item 1 and 20 % for test item 2, of the respective assigned values, based on the perception of experts. The stability was expected to be critical in this excercise, since PAA may degrade due to factors such as the temperature or the light. The overall performance of the participants was satisfactory (above 70 % expressed as z score), indicating that the laboratories are generally competent in in the frame of Regulation (EU) 2020/1245.
